London staged a highly successful 2012 Olympic Games. Venues, organisation, transport and volunteers worked superbly. Londoners, athletes, volunteers and visitors enjoyed mingling on London streets transformed by sporting and cultural events.

Some businesses in central London reported a trade downturn that added to the damage caused by the ongoing ‘double-dip’ recession.

The 2012 Games’ legacy depended chiefly on two longer-term measures. Firstly, the extent that local people benefit from the creation of new jobs, businesses, homes and facilities, particularly in east London near to the Olympic Park at Stratford.

Secondly, the impact of the Games’ on London’s sporting life and on Londoners’ health and fitness.

The XXXth Olympic Games were the third hosted by London following the 1908 and 1948 Olympiads.
